Well, I would not say it is half marine half fresh, but close. Freshwater contains an SG of 1.000, marine water typically has a SG of 1.025. Brackish water has no defined SG, it could be between 1.001 and 1.019, clearly a huge difference. When you set up a brackish water aquarium you set the desired SG to meet the fish's needs. For example, the figure 8 puffer appreciates the SG of no higher than 1.005, so you would keep the SG between 1.001 and 1.005. The Green Spotted Puffer appreciates SG's of 1.010 to full marine, so you would set your tank's SG between 1.010 and 1.025. Hope this helps a bit.
