I read somewhere, and was told last week by someone that's kept fish for years, that it's okay to add a teaspoon or so of sea salt to a freshwater tank for my gobie and mollies.

They said it would be beneficial for them and wouldn't hurt the danios or my pleco.

Is this true or should I not even dare?

if you bought them from a lfs that kept them as freshwater and not brackish, keep them freshwater. both can be either brackish or freshwater, but its best to keep them in whatever they were kept in where you got them, as thats what they are used to. my mollies are freshwater and i have had no probs.
as far as the plec, i'm no expert, but i don't believe using salt is safe with them, hopefully someone with more pleco knowledge can help on that.
