Boyfriend's New Tank

Rainbow Cichlids would be a good choice, commonly found in LFS's...Sajica Cichlids are also very nice, also Cutteri...Maybe Firemouth, Thorichtys species...

You could keep a Salvini, but they're not imo as peaceful as the above (in singles).

Cichlids have their own personality, not every cichlid is the same, some play nice, some don't, its trial and error...

If you get a medium size cichlid then barbs are out because they will get eaten. I had a 2.5" ND swallow a 1.5" tiger barb whole overnight.
And it didn't choke and die? tiger barbs are pretty bulky and strong fish. I'd be surprised if anything smaller than 10 inches could "swallow it whole" none the less a fish only an inch larger than the pray. Unless this ND was actually a fish from the abyss

Sorry, stupid question but what the heck is 'ND'?

The only local fish store I have, is Petco and walmart, and both have sickly fish, so, i'll be ordering from aquabid or another online place..

I had a pair of sajica before and they are relatively peaceful with the tiger barbs and rainbowfishes that I had at the time. Firemouth was ok with the barbs as well. No experience with others.

Wow what a thread

Having kept all the fish mentioned I also would not recommend a rtbs for a three foot tank or a salvini as they can be amazingly aggressive at times

Anything smaller than the rtbs will be bullied to death also

But its up to you if you listen or not all people make mistakes from time to time just don't get an Oscar in a tank that small
