Ok Peeps, I know this is a big no no, but i did it anyway :p . I bought a fish on impulse today, I have no idea what it is, so I'm looking for some help IDing it.

Sorry I don't have any pics, because basically, as soon as I put it in the tank it hid, and because my tank is pretty heavily planted it's difficult to find -_- . Its type of sole (thats all i can remember from the lable in the lfs), yellow/brown colour & spotted. It looks a bit like a small ray, but it's oval shaped.

ANyone got any ideas as to what it is?

Take a look here to see if it's one of these.http://species.fishindex.com/search.php?p=sole

I'd bet any money that this is a hillstream loach, also known as a hongkong plec and about twenty other names.

It prefers well oxygenated cool water.

Colours vary, but does it look something like this?

Nope :/ It is almost a perfect egg shape but a little more elongated and totally flat, it hasn't got a tail either.

OK I just called the LFS & it is an asian sole, they did not have a clue about it, no latin name, no idea how big it gets!

I've tried searching google but all i get is recipes and foot porn!

Anyone got any ideas?

It says its freshwater, brackish, marine.
I assume that means it will need to be in a marine set up as an adult.

and needs a depth of 1 to 140metres, thats pretty deep.

Hmm, why as an adult? If it lives in freshwater when young, it should survive in fresh when older right?

take the salmon for instance they are born in freshwater but migrate to the oceans.

some puffers start in fresh and then migrate to brackish envioroments as adults.

this is the danger of not researching fish before you buy them.
now you know what it is I'm sure you will find out everything you can on how to keep it.

I'm trying wolf! But theres not that much info on it, unless i want to fry it with a bit of garlic and a few herbs!

you could try pm'ing CFC, or wait untill he replys here.

Are you sure The-Wolf? The way I read it was that the fish was happy in all three environments, and could be found at any depth from 1 to 140 metres, not that it needed to be able to swim up and down 140 metres. That page is surely only telling us where the fish can be found, it's not really got any advice on keeping it...

Obviously though, you're exactly right that Barday needs to do as much research as possible!

Oh, sorry Barday, almost forgot to say that it looks really cool, and I hope it turns out that you can keep it!
