Pretty much agree with the previous remarks. Bottom feeders are excellent for picking up leftover food from the bottom (er... obviously), which would probably be extra-useful as a newbie - it's very easy to overfeed, particularly if your fish are good at 'puppy-eyed' begging!
Shrimps and cories are what I'd go for. Also Pakistan/Yo-Yo loaches always look pretty cool in the LFS, but I've never kept them so I know nothing about sizes etc.
