Bolivian Rams

hi there,

i would go for around 6 if they are to be the main fish in your tank. they should be kept in pairs. this will be a big enough group for them to establish pairings and a hierarchy. are you planning on keeping any other fish with them??

yes i think that would be ok. what type of filter do you have??

Going to have to disagree with 6 in a 125. You could start with six and wait for them to pair up and have two pairs if lucky. But 6 long term may not work. You would need to rehome the remaining fish.

yes definitely. that would be even better...be on the safe side!! i would go for 4. try and sex them at the shop so you have 2 males and 2 females. males are generally larger and the very front 'spike' on their dorsal fin is blacker and more pronounced. It is hard to tell when they are very young though so if you are getting the little 'uns you'll just have to guess and hope for the best. they can become a bit aggressive at breeding time so 4 would be a good number to give them plenty space per pair. the aggression should not have any effect on the harlequins as they are hardy fast wee things! i have kept both together successfully before.

good choice of tank by the way!! i had the 200l...loved it!! keep us updated on yur progress and remember to read up on fishless cycling!! I have to read it again everytime i start a new tank!!

ps - if zz thinks 6 is to many, go with what he says!

well i only wanted 2 from the start, becasue i thought u could only have 1 lol, so thought it was best to cheek first. dont plan on have young ones either lol, if it happens then it happens tho, so il try and sex them in the shop first.
well i wanted a bigger tank, so the timing was perfect to get it for free off someone lol. and i know about the cycling, am going to use my current tank to seed the new one when i get it

yeah xmas coming up etc!! i am hoping 4 a 30l 4 a dwarf puffer!!

in a 125L I would stick with 4 (2xM 2xF), and make sure that the tank has distinct territories where pairs can set up shop without being able to see the others.

You can add some other attractive dither fish as well that are non-aggressive.

125L isnt big enough for two territories, if they both spawn at the same time there will be trouble. I suggest buying 4, letting them mature a little, pair up then remove the ones that dont pair and return them to the shop, talk to the shop keeper at the time of buying them and let him know what you plan to do. As geoff has already mentioned, dither fish are a must and there are lots to pick from for a tank that size.
