What the heck!!!!!!!! lol okay, this is getting crazy. First thing this morning, I had a great reply all typed out. It was great, lots of smiley faces, a funny story about my otos all hanging around together chatting before getting to work.... Then my new pug pup, Fergus 
unplugged my computer lol. Then i rebooted, and typed out another response. WELL, i must have forgot to click post.

Anyways, I think you have a male!!!!! He's handsome, and he should color up really nicely with the two females in there I would just watch bc sometimes they'll fancy one female and kind of bully the other one.
I got my dry ferts from bobstropicalplants.com but I would have a look at greenleafaquariums.com, awesome site. I loved mixing up my ferts and making solutions I didn't follow the guidelines from this site or any other that I found. Slim wrote me up some mixing amounts and a dosing chart So i could always message them to you if you wanted
I think I'm def going to set up my 10 gallon for a shrimp/grow-out/fry/betta tank lol. I think the problems I've been having with the brown sludge stuff is from melting plants. I need to get better about keeping up with the maintenance of plants after I add them and not just taking out debris, but trimming them down and not waiting too long. But I was thinking that if I could put them in my 10 gallon first that obviously has a way higher wpg, then that should get the roots going and it would be the same water, so then I could just add them to my big tank. I have my two filters still, so all i would need is a heater, and for a 10g that won't set me back too much
Now I just have to convince the hub that having a second tank in our living room won't make us weird haha.

I wish I didn't skimp on and use the playsand, plus my hill is constantly leveling out. I have to use my turkey baster to keep putting sand on top of the hill 
.... but I probably do. sigh.
