i pour boiling kettle water over the wood then top it up with hot tap water, is there anything else i can do to get the tanning out faster ? and anything else i should be doing with it?

depending on the size, if you got a pan big enough you can boil it. mine is to big to go in a pan or bucket so i have had to put it in my bath and fill it with hot water. its been sitting in water for 48 hours and still releasing tanins. i have refilled the bath 4 times in the 48 hours with hot water. it is getting less each time i refill, the first 12 hours the water was like a strong cup of tea.

i had my 2 sitting in a bucket of hot water i do this 2 times a day and its been over a week

i boiled my bogwood in a pain for approx 10 hours over the space of about 3 weeks, and left it sat in water the whole time between the boilings.

It is still releasing loads of tannins

I have a piece that I soaked for over 6 weeks in new boiling water every day...... it was still releasing.

I gave up and got some off someone in the wanted section on here which was older and not releasing any because I got fed up of waiting!

if you buy some brand new activated carbon and stick it in your filter and leave to run for a week, this will remove the tannins. I have only ever boiled my for a day and then in the tank with the carbon and the tannins are gone ina day or so.

i got told that i had to take the carbon out so i did and put the sponges in instead

That's a good idea for BIG pieces of wood, also you can save money on spray tan by just having a bath! LOL!

It sounds a good idea but i would only suggest you use the bath as a last resort. Its ok for us as we got a seperate shower unit, but a lot of homes dont have both and it could cause some bad feeling in the house. The wife has told me if the bath gets scratched or stained in anyway i got to buy whole new bathroom suite :grr: . This fish keeping is becoming expensive.

I have some Malaysian driftwood and I boiled each piece for about an hour and then soaked them in a bucket of water for a day or two, after that I stuck them in my tank. They are still releasing some tannins into the water but with the couple water changes I've done I can hardly tell that there's tannins in the tank. I kind of like the slightly off color anyway though since it looks more natural to me.

I got a piece of bogwood that I've been soaking on the patio and periodically pouring boiling water over this past winter. I got it in the fall and its still out there but the tannins really don't show much now until past a week so the weekly water change will probably keep the tank clear with this piece. Now I just can't decide exactly where I'm going to glue the plants on to it, lol.
