how long do you need to soak it before you add it to your tank

i got mine today and 2 pieces sink 2 float i have put it all (4 bits) in a plastic box covered with water i will change the water everyday till saturday (if it stops floating by then ) 6 days will this be ok

It partially depends on how long it's been out of water. It will usually take at least a week before it can soak up enough water to keep it submerged. It also depends on what type wood it is. The more dense the wood, the longer it will take.

I read somewhere on this site that it should be soaked for up to a month! but my lfs told me to soak the last piece I bought for a week, and to boil it also

I soaked my large piece which is 20" in length for 6 weeks nearly and it still leaches tannin :)

I've had a piece of bogwood in my tank for months and it still leaches tanins. Have now got quite used to the colour and it doesn't do the water or our fish any harm. In fact as our water is really hard our fish probably prefer the tank the way it is now. When I visit hubbies relatives in Scotland the water that comes out of their TAPS is brown. It makes my hair lovely and soft but I don't like getting in a bath-full of it! :)

I boiled mine for like 6 hours. The soaked in for 3 weeks. No tannins. When you soak make sure you change the water daily.

I think some bogwoods differ.

Got a fair size chuck from one place 9 months ago for my girlfriend, had to soak it for about a week+ changing water everyday coz it was tea coloured

Got a 'same size bit' for my aquarium afew days ago and was told to soak it by the LFS employee when i got it, its been soaking for abit 2 days now and the waters still like gin!
