Bogwood Leaching Tannins

Right my bogwood has been leaching tannins now since march and is doing my head in as you can see in the pics the bits of wood aint small the tank is 5x2x2 but the wood still shouldnt be turning my water brown does anyone have any ideas You can see in the pics that it has a brown tint and I did a 50% water change yesterday.

did you boil the wood or let it sit in big buckets of hot water for any length of time?

lol u find a pan big enough to boil them in they have been in the tank since march so in theory soaking since march so doesnt matter about big buckets.

Some wood, especially large pieces have alot more tannis then others,

tbh, theres not much you can do but keep doing water changes (which is a plus!) and cross your fingers

People are always saying how much more natural "tainted" tanks look, but
to me, it looks like someones just had a p### in it

haha...i dont like the tainted look either.

Anyway...my wood didn't fit in a pan but we had a really wide fat pan that i boiled it bit by bit by turning it around a few times at different angles.

Boiling or putting it in warm water soaking makes it happen quicker as it softens the wood and it leaches faster. But other than that...water changes as said

That wouldnt work either I would need industrial pans my wood is bigger than alot of peoples tanks on here.

only way then is to boil kettles like mad...and big buckets...rill it, let it sit, fill it with hot water again, let it set, etc....

only other way is to varnish the wood

put it in your bath or a baby bath let it soak in hot water and scrub thats what i did with mine and it worked it will take some time a couple of weeks but it works

The tannins can leach out for over a year. I hear there is stuff available that kind of bleaches ( harmlessly ) the wood but this has to be used BEFORE you add the wood to the tank. Sorry but patience is the only answer that I know of right now.

I have a huge pot thingymabob to boil wood in (I've boiled 2' pieces) I just wanted to boast.

You could always put carbon in your filter, though I'd never do it.

i've read that putting them in salt water and flushing, repeating, flushing with fresh water several times over a couple weeks helps to eliminate this. never tried it myself. i bout mine from the store and i guess these are treated as i've never seen and tannins from mine, although the first week they were nearly floatable.

Hi,

I had the same trouble with mine. I had to keep boiling up kettles pouring over the wood in a big bucket, let it cool and then empty the water into a water butt for the garden and then do it all over again. I did this everyday for about six weeks and still the water in the tank would go brown. I was doing water changes twice a week at one point. Keep with it though it will eventually go, I know it is frustrating, but it will go.
