Thought I'd post this to see if anyone else has had the same experience. Last weekend I moved a large piece of bogwood an inch further away from the side of the aquarium. This was to allow the flow from new koralia to get round the bogwood to the filter, as the gap was originally half an inch. It took two months for the tannins to clear after i initially set up my tank, and I move it an inch and my water is yet again orange

my bogwood has been in 4 months and still leeches a bit. I understand it can take up to 6 months to stop

TBH I would get rid of it as it a large vertical block of wood which I originally thought would be a good idea as it would hide the filter. Trouble is, it has a hole running from the top and exiting at the bottom, and the shrimp use this a lot and I don't want to take their hideaway out

What can help with stubborn tannis is using an extra filter (internal)... i used an AquaOne filled with basic filter floss, the filter was about £8 on Ebay and i used to rinse and thoroughly squeeze the said floss in my old tank water, during my weekly changes.

Cheers Terry, they were originally very stubborn to get rid of, even after continuous soaking for two weeks in the bath with hot water. They are two big bits though. I have an Aquael 1000 int filter, which comes with a handy extension allowing you to add additional filter medium. So I tried Purigen, then carbon, then Purigen again, before deciding to let water changes and time do its thing. Its not so bad that I'm going to spend money trying to sort it, besides the fish love it.

Yes.. i know where you're coming from. I have a 50cm piece in my 120L tank and it leaked pretty bad tannis for ages. It took 40-50% weekly water changes over a course of 10-12 weeks for it to clear..bearing in mind i didn't pre-soak my wood at all !!!
The extra little internal filter is a great tip though :good:

I'm amazed at how many of you get so wound up by the sight of tannins, I love its presence in my tanks! Besides softening my hard water a little and being of benefit to many fish, the tea colour really brings out the subtle colours on my fish.

The effect and colour certainly did not wind me up, but mine was very, very strong at first...a 'weak tea' colour each and every day...the effect tannis has is fantastic and natural to my tank, but looking like P.G Tips wasn't doing it for me.

Like the both of you, I do like a slight tannin yellow to the water, the fish love it and it changes all colours in the tank to a very natural look. But I draw the line at not been able to see the other side of the tank when I look through the side glass.
