To me they are still looking to young/ small to accurately sex. I have had some of my young males start developing bristles around the 8cm mark, but I had to look pretty closely - the bristles were very short and stumpy at that size. It's been a while now since my breeders started breeding but I believe that the male was around 12cm and the female was around 10cm. Mind you this is just that particular pair and other people may have had them breed at a smaller size, personally I wouldn't try breeding them to young simply because it will put a lot of physical strain on a small male to try can care for eggs and newly born babies and a small female will most likely not produce a great deal of eggs anyway. So for the time being enjoy the BN's in their youthful activities because I can almost gaurentee that as they get bigger and especailly if they are a pair and breed then you'll be going "Bristle Nose what Bristle Nose?", and will just see a portion of tail or fin sticking out of their favourite hidey hole. Or see them when you drop in a treat to eat, or even more annoyingly see a flash of them as they disappear just as either the fish light or room light comes on.

That's how it is right now.... I don't even know if I have them anymore I keep thinking they have been eaten.... Then I see a tail or a BN flash across the bottom into there hiding spots.... Kinda makes me mad..... But anywho how long does it take to sex a spotted sailfin pleco and how do I sex ome? He my favy he is in a different tank he's a beauty tho!!

I'm not really sure on how to sex a sailfin pleco, there might be a difference in the dorsal fin shape and size with the males being a bit longer and pointer than a females. Also a mature female should look a bit more rounded than a male. I did find a reference book that states "In mature fish there is a difference in the gential papilla on the males, this will be a small and thick noticbly protruding stump while on a female it will be less obvious and lies flat along the belly". I don't know if you were wanting to know its sex in order to get it a companion or if you where hoping to breed them in the future. Apparently they breed in mud caves and are breed commerically in mud banked ponds.
Hope this helps

They get really big I reaLly like the look of them I also got 4 new fish for my tank today there amazing

Mine BN bred at at 6-7cm...most are certainly sexable at that age. The odd male though will develop later. I had a male not grow a single bristle until it was 8cm, thought it was a female, now i know why it and my bristle male didnt get along *LOL*

I took about 10 mins and just staired at my 2 BN's and not a single bump on them..... I guess ill just have to wait and see..... It makes me mad tho I hate waiting
