ok so from what i read on here i had two males BN plecos so wernt expecting eggs from them, i must have a hairy female.

the male has a load of eggs hes fanning.

ive never bred these before so all advice would be welcome.

thanks

Adult females do have some bristles, and are usually the same size as juvenile males that have not yet fully grown their bristles.

Best advice is "leave him alone" :) Where are the eggs?

hi thanks for the fast reply. there in the community as i though they were both males, in a cave i was given, its just big enough for him to fit in and fanning them. it is for BN pleco the caves.

how long will he look after them for?

That's the perfect place for him to be. Why would it have mattered had you known that they were of a different sex? If you have only one cave, then your fish are very lucky that they are not both males, or one would have long since gotten beaten up. A good rule of thumb for bristlenoses is one cave per fish + one spare.

Until they can look after themselves.

i would of moved them to their own tank to breed lol. no i have about 5 - 6 caves in there

If you want to raise them in a different tank, now is the perfect time to move them as it will be almost impossible after they hatch. Just lift the whole came out (I usually place a clean iceream tub in the tank, place the cave in that, then lift that out), including the male, and move it to a different tank. As you would not be able to acclimatise them to the new tank, make sure it is filled with water from their existing tank or has identical parameters (especially water hardness).

ok, would it be safe to move with the male, he wont just up and leave them will he?
i can move him if theres not a chance of him leaveing the eggs :(

thanks

I would say that it would be moderately dangerous to remove the male to him and quite dangerous to the eggs. Why do you want to remove him at all?

He won't leave the eggs. I have a bn pair myself and i lifted my cave out without issue. I didn't even know they had laid eggs (same as you, didnt know I have a pair) and by the time i realized what was going on, I have babies swimming around the cave. Because the cave was actually a hollow plastic log, I was able to lift the whole thing out, babies, dad, and all. He will not leave the children, no matter what.

you 100% sure he wont i dont want to mess this up and i want to move them so they can live as wont be for sure they will live with another 3 plecos in the same tank.

Plecos do not eat their own young; pleco males protect their young. Separating the eggs from the male is more likely to result in the eggs dying because you do not have the experience in removing the eggs and raising them artificially, which is quite difficult, as far as breeding goes. It is also completely unnecessary for bristlenoses, it is only done for species that are likely to abandon their young.

You should only be considering moving him, eggs and cave together, and the reason for that would be to save the fry from the other fish (especially the angels).

ok so should i leave him in the main tank then? its has large gravel so when they are free swimming they can hide among that, and also lots of live plants, i could add more live plants around the cave so its a little bit more protection. will add a picture of the tank so you can see the way i dont it.

You're thinking along the right lines there :good: The final decision on whether to raise them in a dedicated tank or in the community tank is for you to make. Keep in mind that from now on, the female(s) can breed as often as once every 4-6 weeks.

ok ill leave him in there. and put live plants around the cave :)

Pleco dads will normally raise their fry until they are free swimming. This is not a 100% certainty, however. Most fish will eat their own fry or eggs before they will allow another fish to do so.

I have pulled caves with dad and fry for a number of species over the years. The normal outcome is exactly as desired. I simply put a net over the mouth of the cave and move the whole thing.

Most fry in a community tank will end up as lunch, So if you want to insure maximum fry survival, pull them. Better yet is to move the pair to their own tank for spawning and fry rearing. When in a community setting the dad seems to know the babies are at risk when they leave the cave and he will often try to keep them there longer than normal before letting them go.

The nice thing is this is your first spawn of many more to come. You can expect a spawn about every 5-6 weeks for a while. The spawns will increase in size over time.

My practice when pulling the cave and dad is to allow the dad to remain in the fry rearing tank for a week or two in order to give him a rest and have time to rebuild his strength as his eating has been minimal for most of the time.
