I purchased a small group,of BN plecs today at a club auction and must admit I am not a bristlenose keeper with any experience. I am basically a livebearer person with no experience to speak of in the bristlenose arena. I have seen reference to people who keep BNs having driftwood. Is this something that a BN actually needs or is i an option that is often given a new BN? I want to do right by my new fish but I am sure that I do not have the knowledge I should have in terms of their needs. Right now I am prepared to give them things like spirulina sticks, which I would expect them to need, but I am concerned because there is no driftwood in their tank. Is this something I need to add for their health or is it an optional item only needed for breeding purposes?

I'm no expert but I read that they actually need it for digestion. Mine are munching on it constantly. I believe it's a must. They also need algae wafers and zucchini occasionally.

I love your endler. :D

Boohongs right they need it for digestion.

Make sure you feed them algae wafers, pellets cucmber, courgette, seaweed, lettuce just give them a different range of food.

They need alteast one piece of vegtable once a week. I give mine vegtable twice a week.

I am sooo bad. I give mine veggies and a wafer every day. But then, I've got 32 babies and they're only 1 1/2 inches long. They eat off of the gravel and sides of the tank, but I'm always worried they're not getting enough.

Bristlenose are believed to rasp on bogwood to release lignins which help with their digestion. It's also ideal for creating hiding places for them.
Whilst the bulk of their diet is made up of vegetables, it doesn't hurt to feed them things like prawn, shrimp, mussels, bloodworm once a week.

Bristlenose

Hope that helps and congratulations on your new addition! ;)
