I currently have my bn male guarding his eggs in a hollow piece of bogwood in my 500 litre. I have a 60 litre tank ready with a seeded filter. Should I move the male and his eggs together? And should I use a fine gravel substrate or just a bare tank? Any advise or suggestions for this breeding novice?

What other fish are in the 500l? Unless your think that the other inhabitants might eat the baby bn, I'd leave them where they are; dad will do a perfectly good job of looking after them himself; certainly until they're big enough to leave the 'nest'.
Just make sure you have enough high quality food making it down to the bottom and they should do fine.

already had a batch in my 500litre and the only ones that survived were the ones i found living in my fluval fx5 during maintenance!!!!
i moved them earlier today into a 60 litre with fine gravel and a seeded fluval 3+ internal. do u think this filter will be too strong? i have sponge filters but none that are mature.

also what shall i start feeding them when they emmerge?

I should think the U3 would be fine; have you turned the spray bar/planted tank thingy on on the return? (if that makes sense, I hope you know what I mean!)

Blanched veggies with a daily feed of a small high protein granule or pellet food seems to work best.

it aint a u3 its an old 3+. ive turned the flow down and its going into the aquarium wall. im more concerned with the intake of the filter with the fry.

Ah, I see; sorry!

Yeah, I'd be inclined to cover the intake with some thing; piece of net, sponge (or tights, lol) just to be on the safe side:)

What about water changes? I don't mind even doing daily as they are in my kitchen and I done a 50% wc today in no time at all or is doing daily water changes detrimental to the fry. What do people recommend.

In general, large water changes are extremelly beneficial to fry. There is always a tendency to over feed them (I do it too!) to make sure they're getting enough and as they're growing they produce more waste than you'd think for their size. 50% a day (or more) would do them the world of good.

they are still feeding off there yolk sacs still but i assume they are still producing waste.

what foods shall i feed them 1st when they are free swimming???

I give them plenty of blanched veggies to graze on.

Ok so they are free swimming and exploring the tank a bit. I've put some cucumber in, a couple of algae wafers and there's some bogwood in aswell. They haven't touched the cucumber or wafers so what else can I try?

You could try some of the JMC high protein granules or catfish pellets if you can get them. Or soak some flake till it sinks. Mango is supposed to be popular, though I haven't tried it myself.

Just an update of my bn fry. They have been free swimming now for nearly 2 weeks and so far I've seen no deaths. They are feeding well from what I can see in cucumber and lettuce. I've added algae wafers quite sparingly as they don't bother with them and I've had to take them out. I'm still doing daily water changes as its only a small tank and its in my kitchen so it ain't too much hassle. Is it a bit overkill though? Also as the tank is free from disable algae, I've been keeping the lights on for 12 hours a day to promote some growth. Is this detrimental in any way. I've took some photos aswell for people to see if the growth rates are what they should be. I'll add the pics later today when I get home.

heres some pics from this morning. these were still feeding off their yoke sacks 2 weeks ago.
