Hey I'm aware the angle fish, when large enough, have been known to eat neon tetras, my question is thi, Do Blue and Bolivian Rams do the same thing? I've just restarted my 55 gallon tank, but still not sure if I want to add rams because I am adding a school of 15-20 neons and 15-20 Harlequins. Does any body know the answer to my question? Or has anybody had experience with rams and if so could they tell me if they are agressvie towards tiny fish such as neons. Thanks

I have a school of 9 neons with a blue ram female and gold ram male (I lost blue male to mysterious ram loss, nothing else affected nothing else died) They are not a problem at all together IMO and have very similar if not the same water requirements. Although these tetras can be nippy they will not bother the rams and the rams will not eat them. I also have 6 serpae with them and the serpae although nippy with each other will flee from a ram. You will have room for more than one pair in the 55 however I am not sure how many pairs you could get safely. Rams are an excellent choice IMO and have plenty of character, mine come to the glass to see me and wiggle at me if I talk to them (yes I am a little crazy).

Thanks :D I was thinking of getting 3-5 blue rams and atleast 3 Bulivians, The guy at my LFS told me they like to be in trios atleast so that's what I'm doing.

So far my stocking for this tank is going to be

2 yoyo botais
2 clown loachs
5 cory cats (4 julii 1 peppered)
1 pleco (in regardless)
15-20 neon tetras
15-20 harlequins
3-5 Blue Rams - Still not sure
3 Bulivian Rams - Still not sure

I was thinking of getting 2-3 bala sharks... would this fit? If not right now if I got rid of the rams then could I? I've done some research and my friend has 3 currently with 5 neons until his 90 gallon tank is ready and they're all getting along. Balas apparently get along with anything as long as they have a buddy or 2 to hang around with. Any suggestions on any other tetras or on getting the balas or not?

I would avoid bala sharks as they require about 500 litres and need to be kept in shoals of at least 6 i believe.
I think you may end up rehoming the clown loaches as they get big too but I think you may need to up the numbers because they like company too. The plec may or may not grow too big eventually depending on the species you want, otherwise apart from numbers I think compatibility wise you are ok. Someone else may come along to give more advice than I could on loaches and numbers of rams.

I would also keep the corries to one species, they would probably swim together but would look more pleasing as a species shoal.

Clown loaches only get too around 7" unless they are found in the wild, and it takes about 4 years in captivity to reach this size and 7" isn't that big for a 55gallon tank, also balas can live solitary they do prefer to be in schools of atleast 3. Aswell, clown loaches DO like being in schools, however 2 of them is fine aswell. and for the corries, I already have them in my 29gallon and they school nicely, Corries don't care about different types of corries, before I added the 4 julii's my cory cat was schooling with my clown loach and algea eater, also my pleco is a common pleco already about 10-12" he'll get max of 20" but after about 10" their growth slows down to little over 1" every 3 months or so...
