I'm having a bit of an issue with my 2 new blue rams. I've had them for 3 days now, and they;ve been eating a few bugs and worms that have somehow gotten into my tank. But when i try and feed them fish food, my Harlequin Rasboras and Guppies torpedo the food before it sinks to the bottom where the Rams usually stay. I feed them Flake food and Frozen bloodworms, mixing every few days. Are any of the Cichlid pellets sold at stores good for blue rams?

I've tried a few methods for feeding the Rams, by putting the food in the filter and letting the water flow jet it to the bottom (harlequins divebomb the food). and sticking my hand into the tank and putting the food at the bottom (Guppies always got to it first).

how confident are the rams? my golden ram will happily eat out of my hand with something like beefheart

They probably just need more time to settle in. They'll come up for food when they're hungry :good:

Try something like tetra prima or any high protein pellet or granule

i dont know why i said 3 days, i actually meant 6 days. Whoops. Both of them are females, and both of them seem to have formed a mating pair and spawned eggs together, so they are definitly settling in. They seem content at the bottom, so for now they seem to be satisfied with all the live food in the tank (i just saw them both play tug of war with a dragonfly nymph and eat it up.) I went shopping yesterday for pellets but all the pellets i find are floating pellets, and the Guppies and Harlequins would get to it first.

Agree with one of the previous posters, that they will come up to the top when they are hungry, and are perhaps just settling in. I feed my Rams, tetra prima, and a wide variety of frozen foods. Brine Shrimp seem to be their favourite. They also love live foods if you have them available.

Water quality is very important with this species, as they come from a natural habitat that has some of the softest water anywhere. Regular water changes (weekly) are required as they are very sensitive to any changes in water parameters.

Good luck with your Blue Rams..

Mark

Rams are just slow eaters, I have serpae tetras that eat really quickly and when I fed enough for the rams to have a decent share the tetras looked like they were ready to explode.

Sometimes you can change the feeding location and the tetras will take a while to cotton on.
