Hi all,

I have 4 rainbow fish in my tank which seem to be really happy, however the blue rainbow fish has just developed a very distingtive yellow strip on his head running down the back. I have noticed that he or she will not leave one of the other rainbow fish alone and chasing all other fish.
Do you think that he / she is trying to mate, if so what should I look out for and how will I stop the other fish eating the eggs assuming this is what is happening.
If all above is wrong please can you tell me the posible problem!

Many thanks

Mark !

If it's a M. Lacustris, the gold on the head is normal when the fish is in "prime" condition and ready to spawn.

Do you know what species of rainbowfish it is?

THIS webpage has a great rainbowfish listing if you need help figuring out which one it is.

u will have to get a smalll breeding hatch usually available at any lfs for 3 or 4 pounds AND i dont specifically kno how to breed rainbowfish but im sure the mother and father oth go into the breeding hatch and once the eggs have been layed u remove the mother and father and put them back into the tank and let the eggs hatch while in the breeding trap and once they have hatched feed them live food until they r big enough to go into ur tank
ive got 2 boesman rainbow fish they r blue at the front and hellow at the back maybe this is ur fish

It seems to vary a bit from species to species, but it's common for rainbowfish to constantly lay small batches of eggs over a couple days. Usually, they'll do it on a spawning mop or plants. This is a good thing for you since you can remove the spawning mop and put it into a new tank every couple days or take the mop out and remove the eggs and rehome them.
