I've seen these at my Ifs...they have them under the name "electric blue crayfish" but im sure the names vary....I've been curious to learn a little about them aswell.. :D

I have one in my 60gal tank, they are very good at cleaning up leftover food and dont increase the bio load at all, but they will attack you fish when they sleep if you dont feed them enough. They are best kept in a tank with other large fish. And they are very smart, mine actualy used the bubble wall to climb out of the tank.

Has anyone kept them with live plants? Do they destroy them?

According to the information I have, they will destroy at least some plants, if not all.

Well, I want one (and have one) cuz they are cool as could be! I actually have one Australian Blue Lobster and one Red Claw Lobster (yes, I know they are truly Crayfish) sharing a 55 gal with some Prawns.

What I know about them I have learned by trial, error, and observation. I started adding some liquid calcium and iodine to the water and they now appear to be much healthier than when I first got them. For food, I use a mixture of different veggies, like potatos, spinich, peas, etc. combined with frozen blood worms, brine shrimp, beef heart and the like. I throw feeder goldfish in there every week or two...I've never seen them catch one, but they will eat whatever the Prawns don't finish from their dinner. The Prawns are pretty good hunters so the feeders don't last long.

These two little guys are also EXPERT landscapers. I never know what my tank will look like when I get home in the evening, except that it will look different than when I left in the morning. They dig holes, make hills, move rocks around, build burrows, and they are really quite amazing to watch in action. Two little bulldozers that can't ever work hard enough. They also dig up every single plant I try to put in there...then they eat the bulb and the roots!

You also do have to make sure you have any hole in the top of your aquarium plugged up, because they will get out. I just used some floss in the corners and by the filter so there wasn't an opening...I've heard of people just using bunched up tin foil also. Mine have finally quit even trying to get out; so I'm not sure if they're just content in their home now or what.

So, to sum it all up they are awesome; if you are thinking of getting one, go for it!

He just finished with a molt (boy is he BLUE now!) so he is hiding most of the day. When he's back to his 'ol social self I'll see if I can get a decent pic or two.
