Blue Jack Dempseys and Yellow Oscars

i think they are basically just color morphs

Just a colour morph.
Made by breeding and inter breeding these fish over and over again

DD

yes, electric blue jack dempseys are a color morph and are usually weaker then the normal JDs due to severe inbreeding and line breeding to get the color morph.

It's called line breeding, and this is much different then inbreeding, and whether they are weeker depends on how much effort was kept to maintain quality when producing the varients. It would be more accurate to say that they are sometimes weaker, because more often then not they maintain the same hardiness as their natural cousins. All Oscars except for the common black Oscar have been line bred and most of them are just as hardy as the original.

blue dempsey are also commonly held to be weaker than their more common cousins though it has been said that with higher temps, and pristine water conditions, that they can thrive. I am not willing to test these theories though because of the current price for these fish in the US.

I haven't seen any for sale around the Chicago area but how much do they cost where you live?

the only ones I have seen for sale are from Jeff Rapps where he usually charges around 10.00 per inch

From what I have read/heard, Jeff Rapps is supposed to be the only breeder of the true blue dempseys. Breeders are kept to a minimum because it is a recessive gene trait. Most often, any female offspring which may carry the gene are culled as fry to prevent breeding. Males are then sold. This diminishes the supply and as we all know, the logics of supply and demand are what drives cost up.

I, personally, will not buy them as not only have I heard as Juan that they are a big more complicated to keep healthy but I do not agree with culling fry unless they are deformed.

I will vouch for Jeff in that he has good, healthy fish. I have had fish in the past that came from him. He has been in business for years and a lot of people swear by his SA/CA cichlids! I have had questions on fish answered by him and he is willing to help, although sometimes because he is so busy it takes time for him to get back to you.

too expensive for an odd colored oscar. I'd rather have a healthy red, white, or tiger oscar.

aquascape online is raither expensive to begin with. if you really want a gold oscar I would suggest to keep looking

My EBJD is five monthes old and I keep him in with oscars, a reg jack and 3 eels, and I don't do anything different with the water than I normally would. He seems to be thriving, his colours get very vibrant around feeding time. He is not agressive, nor does he get picked on even though he is the smallest in the tank.
I did have to pay 45.00 for him, but I think it was well worth it as he is a very beautiful fish.
I have noticed that they are slower growers, but the end result will be amazing!

I'm not sure that they would cull them, I could see them selling them as regular jack dempseys. They look the same and no one could tell the difference. Then they could still get some money from the other stock.

Its all fake my friend. There is no natural living Yellow Oscar or blueberry jack living today. These are dye colored originals like parrots. These farmers bred these kinds of fish to make more money coz of the color and anyone who is uneducated about these things would buy them. So the seller is preying on ppl's stupidly pretty much.

Define fake? Yes, you wouldn't find either in the wild but they are not dyed, they are just line bred, like all the different colour guppies you see.
