Hi, I bought a piece of live rock about a month ago. After I purchased the rock, I noticed that there was a small blue-ish shelled snail on it. Once I found this snail I noticed that he could move very fast and he had a longer foot then I have seen with other snails. He has this black antennae that sticks out of his shell. I was wondering if anybody would be able to identify him. I will try and add a picture as soon as possible.

Thanks

Nope sorry, cant be of much help without a piccy :*)

Here, I think I found a picture that might help a bit, I can't figure out my camera to take close up shots cause the snail is pretty small so I found a picture of the same body shape my snail has-----> 170950_1_.jpg

oops sorry, I clicked add reply before I was done writing :S anywyas, okay the snail has the same body shape and shell ans that and the same little black stringy thing coming out the front but instead of the shell beeing black and yellow, it is straight light blue, allmost a creamy blue.

Thats a whelk? Ive seen the thing, does not look like any whelk ive ever seen. It is only about 0.2'' long, and its body is not shiny or anything.

Although, now that you mention it......

well, he can have different types of shells, its the stalk you wanna look at.

if its longer and kind of camouflagy blue/white/tan. def aq whelk. put it in your sump or flush it.

Whelks are usually predatory snails that hunt other snails/molluscs and clams etc. they usually have a tappered shell similar to the bumblebee snail given earlier in this thread though they do have varying different colours on the shells of course depending which species they are. I love watching whelks in the tank but i have had to remove the 2 i had (came in on liverock) as i didnt want to lose my valuable stock :*)
