My new 40 gallon has been up and running now for 4 days and I've noticed that my water has a 'haze' to it and it smells like the gravel that had put in it days ago. I was sure to clean the gravel throughly before putting it in the tank and I don't understand why the gravel has such a strong smell to it!

When I first opened the bag of gravel I noticed that it smelled alot like paint. I was quick to read the instructions and it said that the gravel was made from non toxic components and that it should be washed before putting it in the tank. It says on the bag that it is non-toxic. Should I remove the gravel? Wait it out? What is the procedure?

I used natural black gravel in my 10 gallon and it had little smell to it and it did not cause any harm to my tank from what I can tell. Is this 'blue' gravel safe?

Btw, the gravel came from Walmart if that helps.

The haze is normal (cloudy water is bacterial bloom) and water can smell pretty strong during the beginning. My mother's tank took 2.5 months before it was crystal clear water. The odor should be gone after a while.

If you bought it at a pet store , the bag should say for aquarium use or safe for aquarium use [ somthing like that] the gravel should be fine .

you could try using activated carbon to remove the smell.

Do you have any fish in ? If so , how do they look ?

Your tank is probably begining to cycle.

Are you sure the smell isn't amonia ?, sometimes[ most] you can smell it , if you don't have an amonia test kit you should [ at least ,{nitrites} ] get something .

do a partial water change.

My new gravel smelled a little, not bad , maybe they put some kind of aquarium safe sealer on it :dunno: .

I find when i often buy new decor like fake plants, there's often an odor. I always wash anything that goes into my tank to remove any dust or to lessen the odour abit. Don't worry about the smell. As food, algae or debris land on it, it will begin to smell like the rest of the tank. :)

I agree
esp activated carbon.
also run the tank with the hood open (but not off if you are running lights,

i have blue gravel and i had no problems with the smell at all infact they had no smell when i got them maybe it depends on brand ?
