BLUE DEMPSEY????...anyone?

blue dempsey + normal dempsey carrying the blue recessive gene = ~75% normal dempsey fry and ~25% blue dempsey fry.
Hmm... if the blue colouration is a normal Mendelian trait, shouldn't that come out as 50% blues, 50% normal?
The blue dempsey would have two alleles for blue, so all it could contribute to the fry is blue, and the blue geno dempsey would have one normal allele and one blue, so you get 50% normal dempseys with blue geno and 50% blue dempseys :)

Blue geno X blue geno would give you 75% normal and 25% blue, though.

i like them, if only i could get my hands on them
but if you're going to buy a weak fish you should be able to cater for it, so it can live a normal life, if you buy a weak fish, you're definitely not going to throw it into a SA/CA tank unless you have a peaceful one

Hi, here's a pic of my 7" male BJD. He's in with a normal female but no eggs so far. I've had a different male BJD spawn with a normal female but the eggs weren't fertile, thats why I'm trying this male. There's a good chance that there is a high infertility rate in male BJD's, also IMO this colour trait could be sex linked. There's much more to their genetics than the basic Mendelian laws.
As far as hardyness goes, this guy is pretty strong, but I wouldn't put him in with a normal male. He'll eat anything, and is always hungry.... :)

heres the skinny on them. and all of this is second hand as I have never kept them.
while they are genitically the same as any other JD they are a weaker color strain. they have a high rate of mortality to many deases that many other JDs would just shake off. and if they are intended to breed you are supposed to breed them with a normal JD other wise there is an even higher rate of malformities and death amongst the fry.

would I keep them in a word NO!!!! would they do well in your CA tank highly doubtful.
yep, they are very easily diseased and very weak, more of a community fish, even tho they say "jack dempsey" they are practically a whole different fish characteristic whise
