This evening I had to unplug one of my hanging filters for a few seconds because I was rearranging some electronics in my room. I got everything plugged back up, but the filter never came on. I even tried jump-starting it by pouring a glass of water into it to help it start sucking water. Turns out that wasn't the problem - it's totally dead. I have tripple checked all the wires and plugs going to and from this filter, and everything is secure. The same problem occurs if I plug it into a different outlet.

Is it possible that the filter has just died and is no longer any good? Here is the filter type:

Regent Aqua-Tech 20-40 Power Hanging Filter
I have two of these on my 75G. The filter that just died was 10 months old.
Is there any option I haven't checked yet to start it again? I have never had this problem with it before. Is it possible that my filter is simply burnt out and dead?

Not familiar with that make. Always possible to burn out a filter. Assuming it is a brushless induction motor, what normally happens is the impellor chamber has no water in it and gets hot. This makes it distort and no longer function. Induction cells should always be full of water to cool the induction winding. Also make sure no crud has got into the chamber or around the impellor.

I'm not sure if this is the same problem, but it happens with my fluvals all the time. What I do is clean it out totally, take out the impellor (mine are usually covered in gunk) and brush it with an old toothbrush. Then just give it a brushing wherever you see any other slime, plug it back in and fingers crossed it should start working again

Hope it helps :p

also try giving the impeller a spin to kick start it, if there's a weak coil it might be enough once it's got spinning it's hard for the coils to exert a force intil it's spinning away as there trying to turn it backwards a bit too

Yeah I definatly think it might be a problem with the impeller. One time I had a snail that was like this -- big get into the impeller while I was cleaning the tank and the filter was off. I thought that the filter was broken but upon closer examination I saw the snail. Make sure that the imeller fits nicely into the assebly and that there is nothing in there that shouldn't be. If this doesn't work you might need a new filter. Hope this helps!

Thanks guys! Sorry for not replying sooner, I really haven't had time.
A few hours after posting, I just happened to glance at my tank and the filter was running just fine! I'm thankful that it's not burnt out, but pretty soon I think I'm going to thoroughly clean both filters. They need it badly.

Thank you though, and I will definitely keep an eye on the impeller!
