 I have just added black sand to my tank. I spent ages cleaning it, but it has still turned my tank grey and cloudy. It has been over an hour now and I really need to get my fish back in there. Will it be safe? Wish I hadn't bothered now.

If it just cloudy should be safe enough - I had to redo the substrate around some of the plants in my planted tank (my plec decided to go digging for food) and so the water was rather cloudy for a few days - no ill effects noticed on the inhabitants...

I used to have the tahitan moon sand in my Trigon and it wasn't that hard to clean once you learned which way works best with your gravel cleaner. Often with sand, holding the cleaner an inch or 2 higher helps to avoid sucking up the sand but still stirs it up enough to pick up any fish/food waste.

Thanks! It seems to be settling now. I added it on top of my white sand and the fish have mixed it up so it has an unusal marble effect!
