Hello again,
As I was saying a while back I have a 20gal tank (with a few tropicals) and a 50gal (with some goldfish) and then my 5gal (with a really small comet goldfish I "saved").

Anyways, my goldfish tank (50gal) is totally crashing... and fast. I was wondering if anyone could give me some information on "Blood Parrot's".

I've seen them at the petstores many times and would love to get into owning one or two of them (once my goldfish tank finishes "crashing" and is empty) . I think that they are awesome looking but I wanted to get some information on them.

- I DON'T MEAN TO SOUND RUDE IN THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE WHAT SO EVER -

Also, I wanted to add this and see what I can do about this issue: I don't think I could feed the Cichlid live 'feeder fish'... if that's what they eat... to say this the quickest way: I don't believe in giving a fish another live fish to eat, so that'd be out of the question in my case. What else could I feed it? (flake food, freeze dried bloodworms, pellet food, ect.)

Thanks,
-Nikki

They are hybrids, so best look around the hybrid forum. I have them, though would gladly get rid of them if I was allowed :/ No cichlid I can think of 'needs' live fish in it's diet. Mine eat anything really, main diet is, shrimp, bloodworm, pellets (different kinds, sizes etc.)

They are deformed and have a 'misformed' mouth so can't stand up for themselves well or eat things that big. They are fairly peaceful though aren't suited to small fish community tanks. Mine are low in the pecking order of my tank with the other cichlids.

They are often dyed different colours aswel, a cruel process, which if you don't know, there's info. easily avaible on it.

A pair should be fine in a 55g.

Anything else?

Don't want to hijack the thread but why is the tank currently 'crashing' and what do you mean by this?

jayjay - Thanks for the info. I'm still not 100% sure what I want to do, but I still think that I might want a Blood Parrot(s) in the future.

Can I ask another question? As I said before, I only have a 50g tank... I wouldn't be able to get another tank (55g as you said) so would a 50g be acceptable? Because, I've already put so much money in to fish (and I love them) but there would be no way possible for me to spend that kind of money... again for a tank that's only 5g bigger then my current tank. So, in other words, would my tank be alright?

kev_kb - I have do clue why its crashing but what I mean is: My goldfish are almost always sick with something and I'm always going out and buying meds. to get them healthy again and it seems like days after I finally get them all better and everything seems good I notice something new wrong with them.... and they are all dying slowly but surely.

Don't take offense, but I think I would try to sort out what is wrong with your current fish before writing them off and buying some expensive and more difficult to keep fish. I'm pretty certain that the problem with your goldfish can be solved if you start a thread in the Coldwater Fish and Ponds Forum.

Defo get your tank sorted before you go trying new fish.

A 50gal should be fine for a pair of BP's.I would rate them as mid to very aggressive. When young they can be bullied easily by larger cichlids but a full grown BP can more than stick up for its self. They are relatively undemanding fish and will eat almost anything. Some have worse mouths than others and may need smaller sized food.

yeah there not as deformed as they are made out to be,
i got a big male he beats up my male green terror ( whos bigger ) and eats live crickets ( biggish ones )
he attacks my hand if i put it in and even trys to get me through the glass. they arent by any standard disabled comapred to any other cichlid. hes currently 8.5"

Yeah, well mine get their a$$'s handed to them by a 3" sajica and they are probably 6"+ now.

Theres always exceptions but in general they can handle themselves fine and some are downright nasty.

I've had 7 they've all been pansies lol. Size for size even an oscar is tougher than one, a GT or something would tear one apart.

i would have to agree with jayjay. although i have never owned a blood parrot i have only heard stories about them getting bullied. i once heard of like a 5" BP getting bullied by a 2" con. at the petstore by me they have a BP and it gets picked on by the most harmless fish in its tank.

so i would think that they are docile from my observations and from what i heard. but with hybrids personality varies from fish to fish. so who knows?

My Big ones been dominant over every cichlid shes ever lived with and that includes, convict, GT, jaguar cichlid, JD, Midas, Red devil, severum, texas and oscar.

Here she is attacking my hand.I cant even put my hand into my KK parrots tank without her slamming it and taking a chunk out my hand(I can get video proof if you want).
