I've always had male bettas, so this may be a pretty simple question, but I can't tell if my female betta is bloated or egg-bound. There's a male betta in another tank 10 feet away, so I'm not sure if he could even trigger her from that distance.

being bloated with bettas is the same as constipation, unless i'm wrong that's why they swell.
really? bloated/dropsy is bacterial and bloated/constipation is well, constipation
i dont have a betta but i have some general info lol

Put the betta in a QT tank. Treat with API Furan-2 if you can get it. You can also do epsom salt baths which will pull fluid out. Try 1 teaspoon of pure, fragrance free epsom salt per gallon of dechlorinated water same temp as tank. Leave fish in for 5 minutes then return to QT tank. You can do this 3 times a day. Fast the fish also for a couple of days and then try the blanched, peeled pea. Keep us posted.

Oh, that's definitely the reason if it's bloating. She's a real asshole when I feed the others.
That's why i keep mine totally on their own so i have none of that as my female likes to jump for her pellets and my male koi isn't greedy he'll move away than gauge.
What food do you feed her?

Deanasue how can he stop her eating is other fish food as i keep mine on their own, so i couldn't help him out.

Dropsy they go on their side and @HorrorScribe betta is totally straight just eaten to much.
Not true, sorry. Some go on their side, some don’t. Biggest sign of dropsy is pineconing. They don’t do that with constipation.
