i have a flame dwarf gourami that seems to be bloated. it doesnt look like its dropsy because hes swimming ok. none of his fins are protruding. he (assuming its male) seems to be swimming ok but he seems to be breathing through his mouth alot and he is swimming at the top of the tank. i just did a water change. is there anything else i can do? i think hes just constipated but i cant be sure. what are the appropiate steps to take?

Sorry to hear he died. Dwarf gouramis are very prone to diseases due to inbreeding, but also because they are stressed quite easily which makes them sick.

In several parts of the world, it is better to avoid this fish (especially when they are imported from Singapore). Instead you can buy honey gouramis, banded or thicklipped. The honey gouramis resemble the dwarfs most, although a bit less agressive.

Hope it doesn't put you off from keeping gouramis, as they are lovely fish!
