I know where you live
So I've done a decent amount of research on blackwater aquariums, as I breed Apistogramma Cacatouides which are historically a somewhat sensitive fish and come from a blackwater environment.
Here are some of the pros:
1. Natural looking (in my mind, always a benefit)
2. Research indicates that water containing tannins and other trace elements may help prevent/speed the cure of bacterial infections
3. As leaves (Catappa for instance) decay, they host all types of bacteria and other organisms which are an excellent food source for fry.
This website has a lot of good info on it - you could easily spend hours going through their blog posts.

More than you care to know about Catappa Leaves...
There has been an amazing trend in the aquarium world of late; a trend towards incorporating natural materials in our aquascapes, encouraging us to try new concepts, new approaches, and new and exciting aesthetics. I'm kind of stoked to see that Tannin Aquatics is sort of pushing and prodding...
