Thought i'd start a journal. Aiming towards an amazonian blackwater biotope.

Sand substrate. Loads of wood and leaves and the only plants to be floating. This is very much open to change. Have ordered indian almond leaves of eBay and Limnobium Spongia and salvinia of plants alive. My tap water ph is 6.4 and usually drops in my other tank. I had to add coral chips to the filter in my rio to keep it close to my tapwater. So I have a few concerns that with the addition of wood and leaves to get the blackwater appearnaces it may drop the ph too low for the filter. I may end up putting coral chips in this filter as well.

Stocking is still in the research stage

Apistogrammos may depend on what my LFS have. I have seen panduro and bitaeniata so far but I am still looking. Some dither fish, maybe some tetras.

Tank, Lido 120 litre.

I took out the internal filter and have replaced with a tetratec 700. My other tank has the 1200 so am comfortable with its workings. The tank is not a bad size.

The substrate is Argus play sand 15KG, washed through a pillow case. Which took no time and was quite easy. I have a few bits of drift and mopani wood but not altogether happy with them. I want taller thinner peices to get some height with the aquascape. Nothing in the LFS so will have to do a bit of internet shopping.

I moved some media over and have started a fishless cycle. My daughter started the cycle by peeing in the tank.Very thoughtfull of her.

Any thoughts most welcome.

So you decided to go with a lido then! Good choice :) although my cycle hasn't quite finished yet. I really do like the dimensions of them. I too want to get some height in the aquascape, as it is a tallish tank. I'm going to do this with plants though, and I've built up the substrate in the back left corner.

I wish I'd have thought to wash my sand through pillowcase! That's a brilliant idea! Ahh well, at least I'll know for next time.

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

How kind of your daughter.

Took long enough to make up my mind about the tank.

I have ordered some Sumatra wood from aqua essentials. No planting so the hard scape needs to work.

Yayy, a journal! :hyper:

Always love keeping track of people's progress :)

Looking good so far and I'm looking forward to the rest :good:

Really looking forward to seeing how it turns out. It's a bit of an unusual shaped tank, and your plan is totally different to mine. It sounds like it'll be brilliant!

Ooo cardinals in blackwater.

Edit for predictive text.

Progress so far.

Plants have arrived and have taken up resisdence in my other tank.

My sumatra wood is in tank getting water logged and I have aquired a nice tall bit of drift wood from a LFS.

My fishless cycle, day 7 got its first ammonia zero. Slower than I thought as I seeded the filter but its fine as i'm still trying to tie down the stocking.

I'm aiming for a rio negro biotope for stocking so suggestions would be most welcome. So with that in mind

Cardinal tetra 12

Apistogramma 1M/2F ?agassizi. Open to suggestions

Pleco. Again open to suggestions. Snowball and butterfly are a consideration. Have to come from Rio negro and appropriate size for tank.

I might be fully stocked with the above but feel free to throw your thoughts my way.

Thanks Jay.

Just being reading your journal. Fantastic tank.

I love the look of this so far and cant wait to see it progress, the wood looks spot on with some swords and cardinals would be very nice

Cheers. I need to work on the placement of the wood but it dosen't look half bad the way its been chucked in. I'm only having floating plants in this tank with leaf litter on the bottom ,so sorry no swords.

Unless it looks a shambles then ill have to revisit your comment.:D
