I have 2 long finned black tetras and 3 regular black tetras and a pleco in a long 20g (i know about the pleco and size, I have a plan) the plant is heavily planted with fake plants and they are pale and contiue to hide. Why is this? Do I just need some more long finned or regular black tetras?

You need alot more tetras, tetras are shoaling fish and in the wild they depend on their large numbers for security and when in too smaller numbers they feel insecure and stressed even if there is no obvious threat to their safety, it is just instinct.
It is advised you have at least 5-6 minimum for each tetra species so i would add another 4 of each to your numbers, that way they'll be alot better off- the fading of color is a sign of stress.

Well that would be over crowding the tank woudn't it? And the pleco is a sorta counts as 4 or 5 tetras as much as it poops. I heard that a group of six is the minium amount of a schooling group, so could I get 1 or 2 more long finned black tetras or 1 more long finned and one more regular black tetra?

All naturally shoaling/schooling fish will display atypical behaviour when not kept in large enough groups. This may take the form of simply hiding, it may show up as aggression. Whatever, it is likely to be stressing, and hence the fish will not colour up. You have the same problem in your 10 with the tetras.

You can probably add more blacks to the 20 unless there are other things in there that you have not mentioned.

No in the long 20g its just the 2 long finned black tetras and the 3 regular black tetras and a common pleco (I know about the size that they can get and I have a plan) And in the 10g I jusr have to red eyed tetras and 1 x-ray tetra and 2 emerald cories. In the 10g could I get 1 more red eyed tetra and 2 more x-ray tetras so each group can have 3 in it or will that be over stocking the tank?

I guess it wouldn't since nobody said anything. :)

You could add a few more tetra's in the 10g there is still some room left, say four of each.

Well since their is already 5 fish in their I was only going to get 2 more x-ray tetras and 1 red eyed tetra so their would be a bigger group of them and if they still hide after a couple of weeks then I will either get one more of each or just don't do anything and the other two fish in their are emerald cories.

You could get the 4 of each, tetra's are not big waste producers, as long as you have a good filter, as they will just be stressed anyway due to not being in a very big group.

I had the same problem until they died
same fish
same tank even

i searched and searched for anwseres
and throught my research
i found out that
some fish are just scard of the
light

my fish would hide and hoover in
one spot
then when i shut off the light they swim actively

you could try to lower/raise the light
or not put it on
