Hi all.

I lost a colombian tetra that I'd had for about 6 months, but that was probably nearly 2 months ago now. He had developed these patches of dark/black on both sides, and went downhill very suddenly after having had these for at least a month. He was probably nearing 1 1/2 - 2 inches in size, & none of the other fish (3 other colombians & 4 black widows at the time) seemed to have anything wrong, although my oldest black widow also died a day later of seemingly unrelated causes. Those 2 had been through an aweful lot though so I guess I wasn't too surprised.

Now, though, I've noticed my biggest colombian (nearly the same size as my other guy was) is also developing these black patches:

Nobody else (now 3 other colombians, 3 black widows, & 3 albino cories) has any black spots, though my littlest cory does have what appears to be a little blood on one side (probably from brushing against a fake plant too hard?). He's definitely eating fine, & acting happy, but then so was my other guy till a couple of days before he died.

I am quite worried about this - does anybody know whether this is some kind of weird disease or is it something normal for colombians when they get this size (I've never heard of anything like it so I'm guessing not)??

They're in an approx. 15 US gallon tank, & are fed a variety of 2 types of pellets, 2 types of flakes, frozen bloodworms, & sometimes also pick at a little zucchini. I accidently left my test kits at my grandma's house (she's setting up a 10g tank), but the tank's been cycled for months, usually with a pH of around 7.2.

I know this was super long, I'm really sorry. Thanks for reading - any advice would be very much appreciated!!

Michelle.

Well, the poor guy died yesterday. The black patches had gotten a lot worse even though he still seemed to be fine. It's got to be something to do with the black patches but I really don't know what....Nobody else has them at this stage, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them all....

If anyone has any ideas though, I'm still interested to know what went wrong for the poor thing.

Thanx,
Michelle.
