Tank: 125 litre fluval Roma
perameters: ammonia, nitrate, nitrite all 0, pH usually between 7 - 7.5, temp 28

hi, I have 3 clowns in my tank (alng with 3 glowlights, 2neons, 3 black knife ghosts and recently added cherax quad), and this mornng noticed one of the clowns have more black markings than before. They look the same colour and like skin pigment rather than something on the fish.

A bit of history: the tank has been in for over a year and after a few teething issues (bad advice from lfs) has been quite healthy with minimal losses for about 6 months. As we had lost a few fish in early days went to restock over a few weeks and got some angel fish (which all died within a week), topped up the tetras (4 out of the 8 bought died) and 3 black knife ghosts. We also bought another tank fir the crayfish but after adding him thinking it was cycled the perameters went nuts so he is tank sharing till the other tank sorts itself out! So oscar (cray) has been there for 4 days now and didn't know if maybe the clown showed strss by getting more black spots? He is still bright orange and as lively as ever but was wondering if it's anything I should worry about???

Sorry if this is kinda garbled, am new to the site and first time I've posted.

Look forward to your comments :)
Sarah

Pictures please! :)
Can I just say you shouldnt be keeping Clown Loach or Black Knifefish in a 125L tank. And the tetras should be in larger groups. Crayfish will grow big and try to eat your tetras, I just want to warn you in advance. ;)

hi, I know they get big, we are having an extension tithe house and will be getting a much larger tank for them, they are still small so thought it would be ok for the time being. Cray is only in there till his tank cycles properly, thought it had but then readings went off sscale! As for tetras, we did by more but they all died and left us with the o es that survived our earlier attempts at community tanking! Will try and get some pics, not sure if I can put them on as using my phone!

Your tanks severely overstocked.

The clown loaches and black knife fish need far bigger tanks. At least
90 gallon as they get bigger.

Can you post your water stats readings please.
Wht the make of the test kit you are using.

Black patches can be ammonia burns that are healing.
Black spots on fish can be caused by snails.
Do you have any snails in the tank?

Research the fish before you buy in tank size, adult size, compatibility.

i bought a cray last sunday to return it tuesday because it was killing my fish!

ok, test kit is nutrafin test, results (as mentioned above) are nitrite 0, nitrate 0 - very minimal colour change, ammonia 0, pH 7.

The tank has been stable for a good 6 months, I do 20-25% water changes two weekly rinsing filter in waste tank water every month.

No snails or any other critters in there other than stated. Now have fake plants as clowns destroyed real ones.

I know I need a bigger tank for the clowns and black knife fish, we will be getting a large corner tank soon to start cycling it well in advance of putting the guys in.

On closer inspection the spots are on the top of the one clown, only very tiny...almost like he has been caught with a bit of black spray paint, bit speckly really. He is just as vibrant as usual and eating (prima sinking pelets, nutrafin flakes and occasional blood worm) well. I'm wondering if it's just that I've been checking them more with the cray I. There to mMs sure he's not taking chunks out of em. Maybe it's just his colour and I have nt lookd at him so closely before.

Thanks for your input, think I might be a bit neurotic!

yes, I know they can be 'bitey', I am watching him closely...and he's only in there until his new tank finishes cycling. Thought it had (used water from other tank to do it) but then once he had been in for a week the readings went all over the place so we put him in there to stop him suffocating. The fish don't seem too chuffed about him but he doesn't seem to mind them, mostly ignores them.

Black specs can be injury, fighting, digging marks, ammonia burns.
Black spots are usually caused by snails.
