hi all,

i bought an aquaone tank setup a couple of months ago and it came with the aquaone cf1000 external filter including media. it came with two sponges: one blue and one black.

my question is: does all black sponges mean it has carbon media on it?

sorry for the not so intelligent question.

:thanks:

Can't say for sure but the black ones usually are the carbon impregnated sponges. Plus I've seen a few links where they sell a 'coarse carbon pad' for this filter.

Bear in mind the effective life of the carbon is fairly short, typically around a month or so, but it would still serve as a 'physical' filter even if the carbon is not so effective.

The carbon is usually very good in removing discolouration, like leeching from bogwood and spent medicines (following tank treatment) as it has a highly porous surface area.
