I am looking at getting a bigger tank like a rio 400 or vision 450 and would like to use black sand where is the best place to get this.

I have looked about and i cant really find much apart from LFS which costs a small fortune.

This hobby really, really needs a good, reasonably priced black sand. This question comes up over and over again.

Let us know if you find something! I thought I'd found some, but it's grey, not black

Hi, try "all ponds solutions" online, they sell it cheaper than LFS. Free delivery too.

I did look at that, but '1-2mm' is not really what I'd call 'sand', it's more like a very fine gravel, IMO. I'd be very interested to see it though, if anyone has any.

Check into industrial supply shops. I use sand blasting grit in some tanks and it may be available in a black.

Depending where you are I have a decent amount I don't want.
I am down in Portsmouth so abit too far but thanks anyway.

Hi fellow Pompeyite! You could try the Aquatic Centre in North End...I had a 25kg bag of the Unipac black sand from there for about £17...when I looked online afterwards I think they may have priced it at the 12.5kg price as that was pretty cheap - there might be a bag left? Also check ebay; sometimes get a good price! This sand isn't jet black, more a dark chocolate colour...very nice though :)

I have unipac Limpopo black sand in my rio 400. Although its not jet black, more of a dark grey if anything when it's settled in the tank (black when it was in the bag) I paid £24 for £25 kg but needed a little more to fill the tank so bought an additional bag (12.5kg for £12.50). Probably around an inch deep. I got it online, I think the site was chemistdirect.co.uk

the stuff I used is in my sig...that is an accurate rendition of the actual colour (I don't use flash)
