I got some black sand to fill in some low areas of my flourite substrate, omg it's gorgeous. It really made my plants pop out more individually, i put it in drifts to minimize the mixing of the two types of substrate, basically dug out depressions and filled them with sand, and used the sand to help cover some wayward roots after my recent replanting. I used the tahitian moon sand and i just have to say that it's very easy to work with and doesn't float at all. Good stuff, give it a try if you are considering dark sand.

I often hear it mentioned as a topper for planted tanks as long as there is other substrate designed for plants - you're right, it does look nice!

If I may ask, where did you get it and approx. how much did it cost? In other words, did it cost you an arm and a leg mail order with shipping, or can you get it at lfs? I really like dark substrates, have been thinking of trying sand....

I got it at Petsmart after looking for sand in several LFS. They didn't have small bags, i'm not sure how much is in it, i can check when i get home, but it seemed like enough to do the bottom of a 20 gallon regular, for $20. They also had the black sand that flourish markets as a plant substrate, but since i already have mainly flourite i just went with the tahitian moon.

Most likely it was a 25 pound bag. That's one of the industry standards you'll find. 5, 10, 25, 50 pounds and occasionally 20 and 30 pound bags for things like flourite or some types of special sands.

Not bad! My lfs sells it for $5/ lb I think  Otherwise I'd pick myself up some.
