Went to the LFS today, and saw these gorgeous Black neons... they have a black stripe instead of the blue. Think they would have the same temperment? and would go OK in my tank? I don't think I have room for them though :(

I have them in my tank, lovely eyes but a shy fish, only shoal when they are stressed.

So if they arent shoaling fish, then could I get away with only 2 or 3? I used to have 7 or 8 of the neons, and know I can't hold that many with what I have now/how big my babies are going to get.

As long as you have a good filter should be fine, they don't produce much waste.

I dont know how I am for filtration really. I have a HOB filter with activated carbon, but have been told that that is no good for plants, so I will be removing the sleeves and putting in filter floss. Having never done that before I dont know how it will work (cleaning and general maintenance and such)

I think you understood that wrong. They ARE shoaling fish, but unlike harlequins or neons who are said to be tight shoalers, these fish tend to swim less close to eachother. They do however still need a shoal of at least 5. They can also be quite sensitive to ammonia and all that, so you'll definatly need good filtration. They are however gorgeous fish with a lovely attitude.
