My girlfriend went out and bought one the other day for my 38 gallon and he looks great. the only problem is that Im not sure if he is eating anything. he hangs out in his skull all day and comes out at night but im not sure if he gets any food. I also have 4 glo-lite tetras 2 black neons and a lemon. Any suggestions

In my opinion they are amazing fish, but pretty soon your going to have to upgrade your tank. I'm not sure exactly what they need by the time they are full grown I'm sure someone will post it, but I do know its a lot bigger than what you have. How big is he? Enjoy!

My BGK is 8" and he comes out during the day sometimes. He will always come out when I feed the other fish (frozen bloodworm) and he usually finishes off the block when it gets down to him.

something i have stared doing to make sure my P. senegalus gets some pellets is to feed them at night once the light has gone off. this makes sure the angels dont stuff the lot and that Mama P can scavenge some during the night.

could be worth putting in a pieceof a block at night for him to hoover up?

Midnight is currently only about 6 inches and I know he might start snacking on the tetras thats why I want to make sure he is fed. I have been giving him freeze dried bloodworms once its lights out. I just hope the other guys leave it alone for him

your bgk will eat your tetras at night if you do not remove them sooner
Me ?

I bought the whole community from eBay, the BGK and the tetras have lived happily together for several years,. I don't know how many tetras they've lost, but in 2 weeks I haven't lost one.

did you read my post ?

I did read your post, I've put it in bold for you incase you don't notice. And the point still stands, the BGK is only around half grown and the chances are you will lose some tetras. But you may be lucky.

Or you could try this bit ...

It doesnt matter how long the tetras and BGK have lived together for, the fact is the BGK is going to grow bigger (to around 15 inches at least) and part of its natural diet is smaller fish, once the BGK reaches a size where the tetras are easily swallowed it will start to eat them while they rest on the bottom at night, you cannot switch off natural instinct.

If you cant get a bigger tank, theres another knifefish called the "Brown ghost knifefish". These look very similar to the Black Ghost and they only get around 8 inches. Their mouth opens much wider though, so they would probably eat the tetras too. Go to your store and get frozen blood worms for him. If he doesnt like those, get some live blood worms.
