Yesterday in the LFS they were selling what they just called black corydoras they were tiny I mean only about 1 1/2 cm. They were £20 each so well above my price range as I'd normally buy no less than 6 but I was interested to find out what they were. But I have goggled and looked on planet catfish but I can't find them anywhere. They were seriously Jet Black I've found numerous corys that are black but nothing like it. They had a prominant white line along their top fin. They corys I have found are more a dark grey or brown. These were seriously plain jet black. They weren't Corydoras schultzei which when I search is the most common one I find. does anyone have any idea?

I've saw quite a few of these about in the last year. At first I was told these were line bred but i now believe they are on import lists from Columbia

There is at least 1 type of black cories.

C. aeneus black (same species as bronzes)

Greetings. There is no such fish as a black C. aeneus. Black Corys are a color morph of C. schultzei, first developed from a few dark fry in a normal spawn in the Czech Republic. There are many threads, by the world's leading Cory authority, explaining the history of this fish, on this forum, if you wish to search for them. - Frank

I've been trying to find some for a while & cannot find any, £20 sounds very expensive for a cory doesnt it?
Low numbers + strong demand = high prices. I have more than once sold mature. adults for $50. Juveniles tend to bring $12 to $15 and the economy is lowering the demand and price of many rare fish. There are some deals to be had. - Frank

For a while they were called C. aeneus, and also C. venezuelanus, but their official designation is now C. schultzei. Older literature still exists, and it can sometimes be confusing to those who have recently found interest in these fish.

From what I can tell, it seems that they are more readily found in lfs in the UK than the US. In the US, they are frequently found on AquaBid for the currently going price. Corydoras are no different from any other kind of fish. The more unusual species will bring the highest prices. At some point, if enough people raise them and breed them, the price will go down accordingly.

I actually bought a jet black catfish from a pet shop for $3 he is jet black with a silver under belly I bought another catfish a standard freckily looking one and they are the same except for colour although she is a little larger, they also breed together. Here is a website I found about them. http://www.piranha-info.com/default.php?la...black_venezuela Hope it helps

Hi rebma94 :)

Welcome to the forum. :hi:

Thank you for the link, but the information it provides is well outdated.

There is a breeder of these that can be found in the classifieds every now and then. I have a black cory coming with some chery shrimp tomorrow.

I will post up a pic, because there wasn't one in the classified. More pics are always better.

EDIT: would 1x black cory be ok with 3/4 Sterbai? Was planning on getting these in the future...

One black cory will be fine but they might not group together, you would be better off getting another 4-5 blacks instead of the sterbai

Hi thefubar :)

Hummm......Drewry also raises shrimp as well as black corys.

I agree with JenCliBee that it would be better to get more of the blacks than to try to keep them with C. sterbai. They do better in cooler water than the sterbai require. They are beautiful corys and I'm sure you will be happy with them.

Thanks very much. It was Drewry i got the shrimp and cory from. Having seen them i totally agree and have changed my plans to add sterbai to the tank. I think more blacks are going to be better too. I wouldn't want to have a "loner" in the tank.
