i have a male fighter fish and yesterday i purchased a female fighter which i read up were fine together upon waking up this morning a see the famale was latched on to the males fins and the male trying to swim like a mad man trying to get her off they were fine at first now the male just trys to hide and the female attack him.

She has damaged his fins slightly but my question is i have took the female out and put her in a bag of water as i am giving her to a friend who has no fighters. how long will the fish be ok to stay in the bag have no tied it up so theres air gettin in there.

Thanks

Male & female Betta cannot be kept together as you've found out, they will fight.
She can be kept in the bag for a few hours until yo can give her to your friend, have you got a spare tank r tub she can be kept in for a short time?

What a shame as she was a lovely fish i did read up on this tho and read that females can be kept with males just not a male with another male. No i have no spare tank at all my little brother has a tank in the same house but he also got a male fighter the other day. i just have her in a bag from the fish shop placed in a bucket

When is your friend picking her up? It can't be too long as the water temperature will drop, luckily the weather is quite warm at the moment but won't be warm enough for her if she's in there too long, have you got a spare heater just in case?

Was not meant to be untill later on tonight but going to see if i can meet up with him shortly even if i have to drop the fish off dont want it to die.

Yes i do have a spare heater whats that for tho?

Fill the bucket with fresh water and put the heater into the bucket.  This will keep the temp stable.

I am sorry for your situation.  Out of curiosity where did you read that a male and female betta can be housed together safely?  Its unfortunately, just not true.  They are put together by breeders just long enough to breed, then separated again.

Females can be kept in a sorority - all females - but must be closely monitored for aggression towards one another.  Generally speaking, bettas are always best kept singly.

I thought it was on here i read that they can be kept together not 100% sure tho but i remember reading to have 2 females with 1 male so the male does not focus just on the 1 female.

Its not a problem least the bettas are both safe now and apart just waiting on a call from my friend to go drop her off.

I have put the bag with the fish in the tank for now so at least the water is keeping up to temp with my tanks.

I really hope that isn't true.  It may be though as this forum is available to anyone to post, regardless of whether or not the information is accurate.  We try to make sure that any incorrect information is addressed and a more suitable answer given, but that's not always possible.   If I may offer a bit of advice for the future, always search for as many different sources as you can regarding a specie.  One source can certainly be wrong.  Multiple sources all saying the same thing and it being incorrect is far less frequent.

yes very true altho i have had a ton of help here it is not always accurate as you say you find some will tell you one thing and someone else another but i guess it is where they have had the best outcome from whatever it is they have done, its just finding the best one to meet your own needs.

I will research a lot more on the fish i am going to buy but i do usually anyway as i look on the internet on my phone when i am at the pet shop as i know pet stores seem to know nothing about the fish they are trying to sell.

all well and good fish moved to my friends tank she seems happy in there not to much harm done. :)
