Bit Of Advice Regarding Tank Restart

Hello everybody,

Right I have a Aquaone AR380 fish tank. Now this tank has never been stable. I also have 30x12x15 tank which is perfectly stable but this one just never seemed to be right. Anyway we recently had a litter of puppies and kept one so hands have been pretty full with him for the last few months.

Now the state of the tank now is not good. There are only cherry shrimps and ghost shrimps living in there and the tank has been covered in algae.
What I would like to do is completely empty the tank and start again.

The questions I have are:

1. Any tips on clearing out a tank and starting again. How to clean it etc? New filter media, new decorations or can old one be kept etc?
2. Any ideas on what to build the tank back up as? its a 24litre tall tank, was thinking cichlids but I read they like long tanks, would like to put sand in there etc
3. Is the stock lighting any good or should I get new?

Thats about it for the time being! Will be sure to take pics and do a build blog.

Hi, I have this tank (see my signiture). The AR380 is 34 litres and not 24 as you think.

As you can see I have just a pair of Apisto (cichlid) in mine. Other cichlids are unsuitable.

Decorations can be scrubbed and the tank can be cleaned with just water and an aquarium safe scourer. You can add a drop of thin bleach but be sure to thoroughly rinse out the tank afterwards. The filter media can be washed out and reused but if carbon has been used then chuck that as it cannot be reused and is not required.
