Biomax Vs. Substrat Pro

I've just ordered a U3, which comes with Biomax, but I can't help wondering whether Substrat Pro would be a better bio option in regards to surface area? I can't find much data RE relevant surface areas, but since Biomax is tubey things and Substrat is small spheres, I have no idea which one would give the greatest surface area when put into the U3. Note that I've already got some Substrat, I'd just swap some from my external.

Any input welcome.

I'm no expert but I would say lots of small spheres would have a greater surface area than tubes in a given volume of space.

I think often rings and spheres/random are used in combo to different purposes. The rings randomize and slow down the flow and catch larger debris, the smaller spheres/random/gravel pack more tightly and catch smaller debris. In an internal like you're talking about, it may just be best to go with the spheres for maximum packing and smaller debris catching.

I've got the same filter and the biomax that is supplied only takes up about 50% of the media cartridge. I haven't added any more media to it and it processes the waste from my stock with no issues. Keeps the water very clear as well.

In that case I might go for a combo; I'll have a look when it arrives. It doesn't hugely matter anyway, the current stock gets on fine with the 2+ I've got at the minute and that has naff media, but it's always nice to have more than required, especially if I increase the bioload.

I have both media in mine and it copes very well imo
