Hello! I have a question about my power filter. I have a MarineLand Penguin 330 Bio-wheel power filter in a 55 gallon tank and Im wondering if Im going to need an air pump with some air stones to provide sufficient oxygen to the fish. I’m asking this cus the it states in the marineland box that I dont need an air pump or any air stones, so does the bio-wheel provide more oxygen? And I have no need for an air pump? If so, I got to go return my air pump! And get my mula back! ^_^ I also plan to have a heavly planted tank with live plants, so do they need more oxygen? have a good one! Thanks!

If you have the filter-pump set so it causes some waves at the surface then you should be getting enough oxygen in the water for the fish. I have no air pumps and my Eheim filter-pumps create a nice current and breaking of the water surface so the fish have a good supply of oxygen. Just follow the instructions and you should be good to go. :)

ah i c, so i just have to add enought water so that it will splash nicely? cus if i add it all the way 2 the top, it wont splash as much, well, alright, thanks alot! :D

keep the airpump if it was less than $15. you never know when you might have to medicate and you'll need the extra aeration for that. a spare airpump is always a handy thing to have.

The plants will provide a good amount of oxygen during the day, though at night oxygen levels can drop drastically due to lack of photosynthesis. I would keep the air pump.

It's always good to have more oxygen then less, but there is no need for the air pump running. The fact is, in a typically stocked tank a hanging powerfilter provides enough aeration even if you don't set the water line low (and make it annoying and noisy). The best thing is always for the aquarist to observe the tank and see how the fish are doing to get the only true answer - lack of o2 is very easy to spot.
