Big tank filters

Really close to ordering my big tank now - definitely think it will be here this side of xmas. Just wondering what people think of for filters now? The tank will be between 300-450 litres, just depends on what I can afford.

I've had a lot of Fluval FX's in the past and while they are quite good they were not super reliable I had 2 on my 6 foot tank and I think I went through 3 FX5's and 3 FX6's over 9 years with the last 2 being sold with the tank... actually saying that is that actually not that bad? Or in reality is that approx £1500 on filters in 9 years (£166 per year...).

What other brands do people go for these days? I've considered the Oase Biomaster 850 but I don't think it has the flow I want, there are some Ehiems but have heard bad things about them these days?

You can have whichever filters you like but not always with the flow you’d like.

I have a Oase 350 and it’s actually a pretty good filter but the flow output is not the greatest but not bad to be honest.

You can always add a powerhead or two to boost the flow around the tank to eliminate dead spots possibly.

The big two brand, Fluval and Eheim are not as good they used to be imho due to lower quality productions as think both are now being made in China where production is cheaper and components parts of filters also being produced more cheaply.

However they are still very good filters just as long as you know what the shortcomings are on each relevant external filter.

I have heard good things about All Ponds Solution external filters being very good value as well as the newer Jebao filters, might be worth a look.

I have a Fx5 filter, Sponge Filter, and AquaClear 70 on my 90g wide. Really overfiltered. I would suggest an Fx4. Check out AqAdvisor - they give you pretty nice ideas for filtration.

The one I bought used has been running for a while. But I agree. Old fluval filters would last forever.

You never told me this Wills when you recommended a FX6 to me not so long ago!


Mines been fine for a whole months now, i've regulated the flow as it's powerful even on my 520L tank.

What is the warranty on Fluval and Eheim filters these days?

Back in the day, Fluval and Eheim would last 10-20years and the only thing that got replaced was an impellor or impellor shaft.

You could do a trickle filter on the tank or make one from a large plastic storage container and water pump.

3 years for most fluval stuff including their FX filters
I think eheim is similar or same
