Hi all i have a plec that is about 14 inches long now. Has always been happy with plec flakes or cucumber and muscles. But for the past week he's taken a shine toe eating the smaller fish in my tank where he eats the head and tail and leaves the middle. Can anyone explain this sudden change in behavior :dunno:

It would be helpful if you could identify what type of plec you have, check out sailfin and common plecs on

as these are the most commonly sold large growing plecs. A plec that big is going to need a large tank, most plecs are scavengers or algae eaters and do not kill their tank mates but simply eat them when they die of other causes as plecs can find it difficult getting all the nutrition they need in their diets and will take advantage of anything edible they find in the tank.

I would have thought something else is killing the fish first, then your plec is hoovering up the remains. It is usually very uncommon for plecs to go after or even kill another fish.
