How effective would water lowered to 5-8" bellow the rim of a tank be at keeping a bicher in? The tank has a top as well i just want to know how paraniod I need to be proofing it. I dont own the bicher yet so i cant tell you any specifics; I'd like an armored ( I like the way they look) if I cant find one it will be a sengel. The aquariam is 55g. Also are of any of the sub/species of Bicher more or less talented at escaping then the others?

ive had no problems with my senegul or ornate. and my tank is filled right up reed fish are the reel escape artists. i have however covered up all the exits in my tank just in case with hard plastic sheets.

I have noticed my Senegal Bichir trying to escape a couple times. He gets pretty close. There is a lid on it however, and there are only a few very small openings.
I have been thinking of filling in the gaps with some sort of mesh.

My tank water level is about 2 inches from the top.

my polypterus delhezi / armoured bichir has never tried to escape from my 55g and it is full. Good choice of bichir though, by far the best looking imo, and they max at about 35 cm. Good luck trying to find one, there dont seem to be many about!

my 3 have never tried to escape :D

howver if there are gaps i'd by some sponges and stick them in thier to fill em up simple and easy :D

Again my senegal i never had a problem with trying to escape, my snakehead's on the other hand are escape artist's, just make sure you cover any small hole even if it's where the filter/heater cable's go, i used a cut up tshirt, done the job on all three of my tank's, gaffa tape's also good for this...
Senegal birchir's are great and mine's out swimming 95% of the day... :good:
