Yesterday, I bought a BGK. Never had one before and i know that they swim in most directions and are nocturnal n all. My one just seems to be a bit laboured with its swimming. Its swimming a lot but doesn't seem to be moving much. It will swim up an inch or two and then drop back, with its head movin from side to side. This could be nothing, I don't really know. Just doesn't seem comfortable looking.
Its in a Rio 240 community.

How long did you climatise the new fish for.
What was the ph of the lfs to your tank.

What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Does he look bloated or thin.
Does he look pale or darker in colour.
What does it look like when he goes to the toilet.
Can he maintain balance in the water.
Is eh trying to get off the bottom of the tank only to fall back down again.
Is his anus enlarged or red and inflamed.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Any signs of excess mucas.
Was the fish caught roughly at the lfs.

also

does he have a cave to hide from the light during daylight hours

does he swim better at night time with the light off

what are his tank dimensions and tank mates ?

Mine has had the same toubles since being introduced to our community tank about 2 weeks ago. Ghost Knifes swim oddly in the first place and if there is a strong current of any sort it will be even more difficult. This isn't completely a bad thing as it won't hurt for him to build up some stamina and muscle - however you don't want to stress him to death so be sure there is something he can hide away in away from prying eyes and the current. I have two coconut caves set up for my Kribs and he took the one they decieded not to occupy after about of days worth of scouting the tank out. The stays in there most of the time and I just make sure sinking shrimp pellets reach the entrance of his cave.

He seems tobe doing a little better this morning, though i did notice he is getting nipped be a ruby shark is the tank. I noticed 2 or 3 times. What you said about trying to get off the bottom only to fall back down, hes been doing that a lot, but when he really want to move he has no trouble doing so. No trouble swimming when the lights are off either.

He looks pretty normal, I think. I had a cave made before I put him in.

There are angelfish, bolivian rams, a pleco, Thai glass catfish, a ruby shark, lemon tetras and some swordtails.

I got the water tested at the pet shop and everything was fine.

Ok.
if any changes get back to the board.
Good Luck.
