well ive had my BGK for about 4 months now atleast and i still never see it.

it lives in a rock pile i have in my tank and im starting to wonder if i made that smaller, would he come out more?

i kno there nocturnal and all that but the rock pile is pretty huge and hes only about 4" (i think) so he can swim about in there all day and not need to come out.

the only way i can see him is if i go outside and lean in the window to see the back of the tank. do that about once a month to check hes still alive.

also maybe if i had 2 smaller pile at either end of the tank instead of one big one at one end? think that would help?

Thanx in advance.

My bgk is real active, even during the day. If im feeding the other fish he will even come to the top and take food from the surface, especially if it is bloodworm!

I even made a cave for him at the back of the tank but he rarely uses it.

Do you have much else in your tank? Mine is quite crowded with a big bit of tree root and plants around it - i dunno if that is making him more comfortable to come out more?

Could be his small size, the larger tank mates, activity level of the otehr tankmates etc.

Try using a 2 litre bottle as a home for him, you see him, he is safe from other fish etc.

I hav a BGK that is pretty active around the tank, but If I were you, I would split the pile of rocks (as you said). But as well as that I would put the pile of rocks against the front of the tank. This way he feels secure because he is in the rocks and because these fish don't have eyes, they still feel very secure because their sensers can feel the glass and hey don't even know that the glass is see-through. He will be able to sense that there are walls on all sides of him but you will still be able to see him.

So you have one pile at either end of your tank (this isn't neccessary but may help) and you will still be able to see him because he won't even realise.

yea i was thinking my bigger fish could be freaking him out but that happens with all the smaller fish i put in and they get used to them pretty quick.

ive tried the 2l bottle idea before (do you not remember i got shot down by some guy who thought i kept it in a bottle? lol) and the pile of rocks is obviously a much nicer home.

think ill have to try splitting it down as you guys said and try a few rocks against the front of the tank.

trouble is that will look crap :(

need to take everyone out (should be fun) and take some sand out cos i made it too deep so ill probably have a play around then.

jus gotta find somewhere to put about 10 x 8"-10" fish while i do it.....

it wont look crap if you get to see your fish :) i remember that guy flaming you  you are so cruel

Actually they do definetly have eyes!

They just don't have very good vision, relying on the electric pluses they use to find their way around.

you can see their eyes quite easily

for example....

what u can do is get some clear pvc-like piping, with a big diameter, it's often referred to as ghost tube, and put it in a couple of spots around the tankand not trying to be cruel or anything, make it so he can't get into the rocks. he'll search around and find a bit of ghost tube that he likes, then u can take the others out. it's what i've done with all the bgk's i've had (r.i.p.) and currently with my african.
