Someone new to these, just wish to know the basics and facts as finding net confusing. What do they eat, I know they are mostly nocturnal and need large tanks but how do they interact with other fish, are they aggressive, can they electrocute anything or is this just a sensory thing? Many thanks :)

ive just bought a BGK and from what i read up the electrical sensor is for finding their way round and for finding food. they will be fine with other fish as long as it cant get them in its mouth but more than 1 in a tank can cause problems.... mines eating prima and bloodworm and does come out to feed so you do see them :good:

I have an 8" BGK in my tank with malawis, frontosas, silver sharks, convicts, 2 goldfish (temp), jewels, jd's with loads of places to hide and he just stays upright in his place behind the internal filter :)
He comes out and swims about when I'm feeding them... He happily eats flakes and frozen food.
Never had any aggression problems atall and lived with angels for a month :)

Hmmmm Im wondering how he would go in with my fahaka, odessa barbs, tetras.. I know the later two might get eaten and the fahaka for now at least accepts tankmates...Thanks for the input on this guys :)

How big is your guy mattlee?

he/she is about 5 inches from head to end of tail. i think the barbs will be fine but if the tetras are small then when the BGK gets bigger they may dissppear  i dont know much about the fahaka so your judgement will have to do, sorry! my BGK cost me £10 from maidenhead which wasnt a bad price i didnt think for the size

over the years I;ve had a couple of BGK'sand they do make very intersting inhabitants of your tank. They just seem to have a bit of character and they look fab

I;ve kept them with all kinds such as oscars, fire eels, discus etc

yes they will take small tetras but they are that greedy at feeding time you can keep them full. They are easy to feed as they burst out of their hidey hole at feeding time and dive around in a crazed frenzy eating as much food as they can till their elasticated bellies look fit to burst.

I don;t know too much about fahakas but I would have thought from their reputation they would rip the BGK to bits????

this is what i would have thought to be honest

Thanks guys for all the good inside info, it is good to hear from peeps that have had them and know their behaviours etc :good: It was just a thought I had, there is a small percentage that do accept tankmates, though Im going to give this a lot more thought.

thats the only thing taht would worry me if i was getting a bigge rtank to house an abei puffer dont think it would get on with my bgk, as it could probably rip it to shreds, but at same time i dont want to get rid of him so i can house a puffer not sure what to do

id be extremely careful if i were u if you do plan to put a bgk in with a fahaka

my bgk shares a tank with a pencil fish 2 dainios and barbs and tetras and never showed 1 piece of aggression, hes very tame and about 5" long eats out of my hands and comes and lies in in when i cup it in the water its rerally something else, he loves to eat bloodworm and only recently started taking flakes but i normallf feed him bloodworm then rest of tank after it because boogie my bgk will eat all the flakes

I have to say out of my 3 puffs the fahaka is the most docile, my abei the worst! He may be my smallest puff but he has attitude. He has eaten a random guppy fry that I didn't know was in the tank. The hairy def eats other fish as piscivore and other than the one Odessa the fahaka is pretty good. I wouldn't put abei and bgk together, well I should say wouldn't put mine with one lol. He is the only one I have to watch with fingers

I've had my BGK for a few months now.. he seems VERY timid.. he won't come out of his hole to eat.. so I've been forced to leave a wafer or something in there for him to eat when I turn the lights off at light..

Saying that, he seems to be eating fine - he lives with smaller fish such as Neon Tetras, Guppies & Kuhli Loaches.. although they do snap up a lot of the food, I'm sure he'd knock one or two off if he was starving.. But he has never been aggressive...

I'm wondering if I may be overfeeding my tank (or him specifically) by dropping the pellet in when the lights go out.. I just love him (I've nicknamed him Spock ;) ...) and don't want to see my little buddy gone to waste... he will be eventually moved into a bigger 4ft tank which will be planted by the time he gets in there..

Any tips or thoughts or queries are welcome!
