Is it possible to put a betta in a tank which has not finished cycling? Tank has been going for a couple of weeks.

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0.3-1
Nitrate: High
Ph: 8

Cheers.

Although I'm new to bettas myself this is what I have gained from this forum

Bettas are very hardy and can be used to cycle tanks, they can even handle 100% water changes.

If i'm wrong tell me

COOL!

So say if i were to go get one in the next few days would it be ok?

Also should be fine in my 20 gallon with my other fish?

I definatly want a plec and corys, possibly oto's too!

So if i cant have a plec with a betta, i probably wont bother getting one :(.

Cheers.

As my lfs says, think of the main fish you want, e.g. Plec, and get fish which can go with that :D.

Aw heck, Bettas are the easiest fish to keep in a tank....

I usually always do 100% water changes with my betta tank, and use bottled water for room temp. water. Then just add some betta drops and plonk my fish back in.

its ok to put it in. my bettas have all lived through cycling and looked very healthy and happy throughout the whole thing. they are unbelievably hardy fish. by the way, you should lower the pH. 8 is way too high for bettas. get some "proper pH" and keep it at 7.0!

hummm quick question along the same lines;
is it alright to begin cycling a tank using bettas?
im setting up some divided 15 gals for my boys and wanna know if i can have em in there and just do the required water changes. im seriously worried bout hurting my boys thou, they are so special to me
im also going to have some plants and plecos ... should i add em all together or wait till the tank is cycled?

Dont add a pleco or any catfish till your tank is cycled, well thats what my lfs recommended.

yikes  i didnt realize how big plecos could get - 60cm is toooo big for my divided tank. maybe a smaller type...
hummm.. any suggestions on what i could get to help clean the tank but not munch on my plants too much? i've heard of ottos and ghost shrimp and i will research them some more.

thanks for the response danio and bringing up a excellent point bout the plecos!

alrights sounds like a good tidbit of advice - thanks corrosive :)
did your lfs say how come you shouldnt add them till after cycling? im just curious as to the reason why not.

The tank does not have the stuff they like(need) in a tank, plus they are quite delicate :D.

They need a mature tank to live in, but i think a cycled tank should do ;).

If you get things like oto's once your tanks cycled make sure they have lots of food, because there wont be much algae around i dont think.

corys of each side? do you mean of each gender? im a little confused lol
im gonna look into the ottos for sure and maybe some sordtails - thanks for all the suggestions! eeeee my head is spinning with fishy ideas :fun:
